Re-key a Lock

Re-key a Lock | Local Locksmith | FL Keys & Locksmith Guys

To re-key a lock is to reset a lock, so the old keys cannot unlock it. The main reason to reset (re-key) a lock is to have control over who operates (unlock) the lock. If a person has a key to the lock and you now want to revoke their privileges of opening the door, re-keying the lock will address this issue. There is no need to change lock.

The process of re-keying a lock involves removing the old pins and springs from the lock cylinder, and putting new pins and springs. The new pins and springs combination make the lock as if it is a new lock. The lock still looks the same, but the pins and springs (the mechanism) that operates it are not, and the only keys that will work with, and that will open the new mechanism, are the new keys.

The lock with the new pins and springs is just as good as the one with the old pins and springs.

Although the re-key process is relatively a simple process, it does require however, great expertise, unique parts, and special tools.
